Yes, the book is dry but it came with water stains at the bottom whereas the mail envelope had none. I guess it got wet some time before it was packaged and sent to me. The content however, is magnificent so I have to give it 5 stars. A wide variety of exquisite apparel is inside and all designs are thoroughly covered even if it takes more than one page. This book shows how to transform for example, the basic bodice etc. into a catwalk worthy masterpiece. It even addresses​ how to use different types of fabric. The instructions and diagrams are clear and informative; any experienced pattern drafter/maker can use this book. I am a beginner and I like the Italian system (Il Modellismo). Donnanno is a genius. Buy the book!
Preface-The preface was a nice introduction to the overall book.Chapter One- I really enjoyed this section it was succinct and interesting. I will definitely be keeping an eye out for {Psychologie de la mode}. This chapter briefly highlights an important thesis in design and the clothing sphere.Chapter Two-Pleats,drapes and frills,I think this section was okay, I was not thrilled with it. Most of the garments remind me of the late 70-early 80's in terms of style. Not my favorite decade of fashion but if you can understand the design concepts you can take and create what you imagine.Chapter Three-Ruffles,Flounces and Jabot, I think this section was pretty decent, the breakdown of the flounces are not to shabby. This section also includes practice design section.Chapter Four-Raglan sleeve garments, This section was okay, nothing to fancy grabbed my attention.Chapter Five-Kimono and Batwing garments, This section was okay . I really like the fact that menswear was thrown in as well. I'm not sure but for some reason I really love the designers, designs when it comes to coats and jackets. I'm a sucker for decorative designs on those items and this author does deliver.Chapter Six-Tailoring concepts, I am not a fan of this section I think it was too bare to really execute the skills it was showing and to basic for those with a background in tailoring.Nor does it cover a lot of tailoring techniques it pretty much skimmed over sewing with lace, scallopped edges as well as sequined fabrics.Chapter Seven-Basic Draping Techniques-was pretty much along the lines of chapter 6, not enough information for newbie's, unnecessary information for the more advanced.Chapter Eight-Painting on fabric. IMHO this section needs an entire book dedicated to it. One chapter that is 26 pages is not sufficient.Chapter Nine-Technical Concepts/CADMy thoughts about this book are mixed and here's why. If you have a solid understanding in pattern making and draping, obtaining a fabric manipulation book might be more useful in the long run. At the same time it is good to have a book that shows how the pattern should be laid out and put together -it seems to be more for someone who can pattern cut, and drape but may have trouble visualizing how the pattern will look to create certain effects. Either way this is in no way a must have book. I'm a bit disappointed actually because for a couture book, I thought creating understructures would have been mentioned and delved into. Most couture garments have some serious understructures supporting them as well as amazing sewing skills.I think this book would have been better had the author revised section 6-9 and included best sewing practices as well as understructures.The book assumes you are starting with a basic block to start designing with and so does not go indepth on how to make one. The book also does not spend a great deal of time providing written directions , which I feel is okay for the demographic it is targeting.The book instead has some diagrams to show how the pattern should be laid out. Is it worth it? For Moi No. I have not gotten much use out of this book. The book should have also been spiral bound.
If you can slash and spread, pivot and manipulate the basic sloper, then this book is a dream come true. It is filled with complex fashion designs and the basic technical patterns needed to manipulate your sloper into a new style. I bought the whole series and they are the best books I have seen and I have them all.
Current student at FIT. Vintage lover. Statement piece creator. Fashion book collector. This book is going to help me bring many ideas to life. I love how various couture styles are covered - patternmaking as well as the section on fabric painting. It may be hard for someone who is not well versed in pattern making to understand pattern section as it’s illustrations+ pattern layout + pattern piece visualized. There isn’t any specific step by step process listed in that section. Great book overall looking fwd to collecting the series
Excellent book to add to my collection. For new pattern makers I recommend using this book alongside Suzy Furrers Building Patterns: The architecture of Women’s Clothing.I hope they come out with a Vol 2 of this book
